Founded by Professor Andrew McDonnell, Studio 3 has spent 25+ years developing evidence-based approaches to supporting people in distress — without restraint or force.
In the late 1990s, Professor Andrew McDonnell began questioning the widespread use of restraint and seclusion in care settings. His research showed that aggressive interventions didn't reduce distress — they escalated it.
Out of this research, the Low Arousal Approach was born. A non-aversive, evidence-based method that focuses on reducing stress, understanding behaviour as communication, and creating environments where people can thrive.
Today, Studio 3 operates across the UK, Ireland, Canada, Germany, and Australia. We've trained over 50,000 professionals, published three books, and built a body of research that continues to change how the world thinks about crisis management.

A non-aversive, evidence-based method for supporting people in distress. Here's how it works.
When someone is in distress, the worst thing you can do is add more pressure. We teach staff to lower arousal levels — their own and the person's — rather than escalate with force or confrontation.
Distressed behaviour is a signal, not a problem to suppress. We help professionals decode what someone is communicating through their behaviour and respond with empathy, not control.
The goal isn't just managing crisis — it's preventing it. We work with organisations to create physical and social environments that reduce stress and promote well-being for everyone.
Our team of clinical psychologists, trainers, and practitioners bring decades of experience in mental health, education, and crisis management.
